Hi, my name is Earl, and welcome to Earl’s Library.
Today I am continuing my discussion of Jack Canfield’s book “The Success Principles”.
I’ve been reading the 10th Anniversary edition of this incredible book, and so far I discussed the principles from the first six chapters. These include:
- Take 100% responsibility for your life
- Be clear why you are here
- Decide what you want
- Believe it is possible
- Believe in yourself
- Use the law of attraction
Let’s continue. The seventh success principle discussed in the book is:
UNLEASH THE POWER OF GOAL SETTING
“If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes.” -Catherine Ponder
In this chapter Jack Canfield quickly disputes a often cited Yale study on the results of goal setting, not based on the statistics, but based on not having any proof that such a study was conducted at Yale. However, he goes on to share the statistics of a study that was conducted and documented, and the results clearly show the benefits of goal setting.
“The study provides empirical evidence for the importance and effectiveness of three essential success principles: (1) writing down your goals; (2) making a public declaration of your goals; and (3) being accountable to another person – such as a coach, an accountability partner, or a mastermind group – for the achievement of your goals” -Jack Canfield
Jack states that for a goal to unleash the power of our subconscious mind it has to meet two criteria: how much and by when. He goes on to remind us that vague goals produce vague results.
Next Jack tells us that we need to write out our goals in detail. This act will provide clarity and specificity to our goals.
“Because the ultimate goal, in addition to achieving your material goals, is to become a master of life. And to do this, you will need to learn new skills, expand your vision of what’s possible, build new relationships, and learn to overcome your fears, considerations, and roadblocks.” -Jack Canfield
Jack encourages us to set what he calls a breakthrough goal. That is a goal that would represent a quantum leap for you and your career. He says that writing a bestselling book was a breakthrough goal for him and Mark Victor Hansen.
Jack advises us to reread our goals at least twice a day. He writes his goals on 3″ x 5″ index cards, and reads them before going to bed each night, and when waking up each morning. And when traveling he takes the cards with him to continue the practice. He shares that W. Clement Stone taught him to write his most important goal on the back of his business card and carry it in his wallet at all times. That way ever time he opened his wallet, he would be reminded of him most important goal.
The chapter continues with an excellent warning for goal setters. That being that as soon as you set your new goals three things will emerge to try and stop you from achieving them. Considerations, fears, and roadblocks. All three are normal and expected, and as long as you know about them, you can handle them and not be stopped by them.
Considerations are those nagging thoughts that try to get you to doubt your ability to achieve your goal. Jack says that surfacing these considerations is a good thing because they have been in your subconscious mind stopping you all along. Now that they are in your conscious awareness you can deal with them head on.
Fears are just emotions. Like considerations, they are just part of the process of achieving your goals. Once you know that they are not unusual you can address and move past them toward your goals.
Finally, you will become aware of roadblocks. Unlike considerations and fears which are in your mind, roadblocks are external. These are just things that life throws at you. You will just need to handle them on your way to achieving your goals. Depending on how big your goals are, the roadblocks may be equally as big. But the road blocks are where the growth happens. You will need to grow into the person who can get past the roadblocks.
“You want to set a goal that is big enough that in the process of achieving it you become someone worth becoming.” -Jim Rohn
“Stay tuned for more from “The Success Principles”, in my next post.
Until next time, have a Superfantastic day!
