Hi, my name is Earl, and welcome to Earl’s Library.
Today I heard some sage advice from one of my mentors Joseph McClendon III.
Rather than try to summarize or restate his excellent advice, which I 100% agree with, I thought I would just share a link to his video and let you hear it straight from the man himself.
You can start your library today with Joseph’s outstanding book “Get Happy Now”. You can pick up a copy from Amazon at this link today…
Hi, my name is Earl, and welcome to Earl’s Library.
Today as I listened to Dale Carnegie’s book “How to win Friends & Influence People” I heard him share the poem “Father Forgets” by W. Livingston Larned. I’ve heard this poem several times in my life, and this time, like each time before it, the poem brought tears to my eyes. I’ve decided to share it for anyone who may not have heard it before, or who needs to hear it again now…
“Father Forgets”
Listen, son: I am saying this as you lie asleep, one little paw crumpled under your cheek and the blond curls stickily wet on your damp forehead. I have stolen into your room alone. Just a few minutes ago, as I sat reading my paper in the library, a stifling wave of remorse swept over me. Guiltily I came to your bedside.
There are the things I was thinking, son: I had been cross to you. I scolded you as you were dressing for school because you gave your face merely a dab with a towel. I took you to task for not cleaning your shoes. I called out angrily when you threw some of your things on the floor.
At breakfast I found fault, too. You spilled things. You gulped down your food. You put your elbows on the table. You spread butter too thick on your bread. And as you started off to play and I made for my train, you turned and waved a hand and called, “Goodbye, Daddy!” and I frowned, and said in reply,
“Hold your shoulders back!”
Then it began all over again in the late afternoon. As I came up the road I spied you, down on your knees, playing marbles. There were holes in your stockings. I humiliated you before your boyfriends by marching you ahead of me to the house. Stockings were expensive‐and if you had to buy them you would be more careful! Imagine that, son, from a father!
Do you remember, later, when I was reading in the library, how you came in timidly, with a sort of hurt look in your eyes? When I glanced up over my paper, impatient at the interruption, you hesitated at the door. “What is it you want?” I snapped. You said nothing, but ran across in one tempestuous plunge, and threw your arms around my neck and kissed me, and your small arms tightened with an affection that God had set blooming in your heart and which even neglect could not wither.
And then you were gone, pattering up the stairs. Well, son, it was shortly afterwards that my paper slipped from my hands and a terrible sickening fear came over me. What has habit been doing to me?
The habit of finding fault, of reprimanding‐this was my reward to you for being a boy. It was not that I did not love you; it was that I expected too much of youth. I was measuring you by the yardstick of my own years.
And there was so much that was good and fine and true in your character. The little heart of you was as big as the dawn itself over the wide hills. This was shown by your spontaneous impulse to rush in and kiss me good night. Nothing else matters tonight, son. I have come to your bedside in the darkness, and I have knelt there, ashamed!
It is feeble atonement; I know you would not understand these things if I told them to you during your waking hours. But tomorrow I will be a real daddy! I will chum with you, and suffer when you suffer, and laugh when you laugh. I will bite my tongue when impatient words come. I will keep saying as if it were a ritual: “He is nothing but a boy‐a little boy!”
I am afraid I have visualized you as a man. Yet as I see you now, son, crumpled and weary in your cot, I see that you are still a baby. Yesterday you were in your mother’s arms, your head on her shoulder. I have asked too much, too much.

Hi, my name is Earl, and welcome to Earl’s Library.
Today I am continuing my discussion of Jack Canfield’s book “The Success Principles”.
I’ve been reading the 10th Anniversary edition of this incredible book, and so far I discussed the principles from the first nine chapters. These include:
Take 100% responsibility for your life
Be clear why you are here
Decide what you want
Believe it is possible
Believe in yourself
Use the law of attraction
Unleash the power of goal setting
Chunk it down
Success leaves clues
Let’s continue. The tenth success principle discussed in the book is:
RELEASE THE BRAKES
“Everything you want is just outside your comfort zone.” -Robert Allen
Jack shares that several people go through life with a psychological emergency brake on. Like forgetting to disengage the parking brake on your car limits your car’s progress, living in your comfort zone and maintaining guilt and self doubt will limit your progress toward you goals.
He advises that we need to “release the brakes” by letting go of and replacing your limiting beliefs, change your self-image, and releasing negative emotions like fear, resentment, anger, guilt, and shame.
You need to get out of your comfort zone. It is compared to a self-created prison. It is limiting you mentally in the same way a prison limits you physically.
You are never stuck. You just keep recreating the same experience over and over by thinking the same thoughts, maintaining the same beliefs, speaking the same words, and doing the same things. To change this, you must focus instead on thinking, talking, and writing about a reality you want to create. You must flood your unconscious with thoughts and images of a new desired reality.
“The significant problems we face cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them” -Albert Einstein
One of the ways discussed for changing your thinking and filling your unconscious with new thoughts is to use affirmations. Jack details the process for creating effective affirmations and supplies nine guidelines.
Start with the words “I am”
Use the present tense
State it in the positive. Affirm what you want, not what you don’t
Keep it brief
Make it specific
Include an action word ending with “-ing”
Include at least one dynamic emotion or feeling word
Make affirmations for yourself, not others
Add “or something better”
This section of the book included the following example:
“I am enjoying living in my beautiful beachfront villa on the Ka’anapali coast of Maui or somewhere better”
The chapter also provides recommendations for using affirmations. Here is what it says:
Review your affirmations one to three times a day
If appropriate, read each affirmation out loud
Close your eyes and visualize yourself as the affirmation describes
Hear any sounds you might hear when you successfully achieve what your affirmation describes
Feel the feelings that you will feel when you achieve that success
Say your affirmation again, then repeat this process with the next affirmation

Hi, my name is Earl, and welcome to Earl’s Library.
Today I am continuing my discussion of Jack Canfield’s book “The Success Principles”.
I’ve been reading the 10th Anniversary edition of this incredible book, and so far I discussed the principles from the first eight chapters. These include:
Take 100% responsibility for your life
Be clear why you are here
Decide what you want
Believe it is possible
Believe in yourself
Use the law of attraction
Unleash the power of goal setting
Chunk it down
Let’s continue. The ninth success principle discussed in the book is:
SUCCESS LEAVES CLUES
“Long ago, I realized that success leaves clues, and that people who produce outstanding results do specific things to create those results. I believed that if I precisely duplicated the actions of others, I could reproduce the same quality of results that they had.” -Anthony Robbins
Jack tells us that this principle applies to anything you want to do. Whatever it is, someone else has already done it. Not only that, they have left clues in the form or books, manuals, audio and video programs, university classes, online courses, seminars, and workshops.
Here are some ways you can find the clues you need: 1 – Seek out a teacher, coach, mentor, a manual, book etc. 2 – Seek out someone who has already done what you want to do, and ask if you can interview them 3 – Ask someone if you can shadow them for a day and watch them work, or offer to be their assistant.

Hi, my name is Earl, and welcome to Earl’s Library.
Today I am continuing my discussion of Jack Canfield’s book “The Success Principles”.
I’ve been reading the 10th Anniversary edition of this incredible book, and so far I discussed the principles from the first seven chapters. These include:
Take 100% responsibility for your life
Be clear why you are here
Decide what you want
Believe it is possible
Believe in yourself
Use the law of attraction
Unleash the power of goal setting
Let’s continue. The eighth success principle discussed in the book is:
CHUNK IT DOWN
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small, manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.” -Mark Twain
The first step is setting the big goal. Remember it should be measurable and have specific deadlines. The next step is to determine all of the individual action steps you will need to take to accomplish your goal. These are the chunks.
What if you don’t know what the actions steps are? Jack offers several methods to figure that out. One way is to ask someone who has already accomplished the goal you desire. They can provide the steps need, and can give you advice on how to do them, and what to avoid in the process. Another way is to find a book or manual or training course that you can learn from. Another method he shares is to start from the end state of having achieved the goal, and work backwards. Imagine you have achieved the goal already, then then imagine all of the things that had to happen to achieve the goal. Keep going backwards until you get to the starting point of where you are now. Another method that Jack talks about is using Mind Mapping.
Once you have identified the necessary action steps, your next task is to make a daily to-do list. List them in order with a completion date for each, and then add them to your calendar as part of your schedule.
Eat That Frog – Brian Tracy
Jack references the excellent book by Brian Tracy titled “Eat that Frog! 21 Great ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time”. In his unique system, Brian advises goal-setters to identify the one to five things you must accomplish on any given day, and then pick the one you absolutely must do first. This is your big ugly frog. If you have to eat the ugly frog before the end of the day, the best course of action is to eat it first and get it over with. He points out that when you accomplish your toughest task early in the day, it sets the tone for the rest of your day. It creates momentum and builds your confidence.
Jack teaches us that one of the most powerful tools used by high performance achievers for chunking things down is to plan their next day the night before. The two reasons he sites for doing is are:
If you plan the night before, it allows your subconscious mind to work on the tasks all night long
By creating your to-do list the night before, you can start your day running, instead of figuring out what you are going to do.

Hi, my name is Earl, and welcome to Earl’s Library.
I’m taking a brief detour away from my deep dive into Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” today because I heard a discussion about setting goals that I wanted to share.
I was listening to Brian Tracy’s “How to Master Your Time” program on the way into work this morning, and he was talking about having balanced goals. He described a way to look at setting goals that’s different than what I’ve heard from others. I thought I would share it just in case it might resonate with you as it did for me.
Brian Tracy on Balanced Goal Setting Balance is achieved by having three categories of goals.
1) The “What” goals These are our business, career, and financial goals. They are the things you wish to achieve, have, and do.
2) The “Why” goals These are our personal, family, and health goals. These goals answer the question of why we want to achieve the “What” goals. Stated another way, we achieve the “What” goals, so that we can be, have, and do the “Why” goals.
3) The “How” goals These are our personal and professional development goals.
The “How” goals grow us into the person who can achieve the “What” goals so that we can enjoy the “Why” goals.
What do you think of this idea for goal setting? Write your ideas in the comments section below.
